Tugboats, the semi's of the ocean. They pass Powell River pulling logbooms, construction barges, scows of hogfuel and chips for the local paper mill, train barges, barges loaded with
semi-trailers and chemical tankers and more. And I take their pictures as they pass.

Here you will find some of the photos I have taken of those tugboats as they pull their tows up and down Malaspina Strait and the surrounding waters. Big ones and little ones, good looking tugs and some not so.
I like them all, and if you like tugs - including tugs converted to other uses - I invite you to have a look.

Charles H Cates IV - she comes to Powell River in relief for the locally based Seaspan tug, the Ace, when the Ace goes down to the Seaspan shipyard in North Vancouver for maintenance. The latest photos are the third time she's done this. Top, she is next to a barge of hog fuel that the Rose Mackenzie has towed up from the Lower Mainland. Middle, she's crossing the south mouth of the mill harbour, and on her way back to her berth in the city's South Harbour. Both middle shots have the sand banks of Harwood Island in the background. In the last 2 shots she is leaving the South Harbour on a call-out to the mill the first time she was here.
